Does converting 3DS to STL lose quality?#
Not in the sense of pixels or samples. What is a 3DS file?#
A 3DS file is the binary, chunk-based scene format of Autodesk's 3D Studio DOS, released in 1990, storing mesh, texture and lighting data behind two long-standing limits: 65,536 vertices per mesh and 8-character names.
Use 3DS only when the destination is legacy software that specifically expects the format, since its limits make it a poor choice for anything new.

What is an STL file?#
An STL file is a triangle mesh created by 3D Systems in 1987 for its stereolithography 3D printers, storing nothing but a flat list of triangle facets and their normals, with no colour, material or unit of measurement attached.
Use STL when the only destination is a 3D printer's slicer, which is all the format was designed to feed.
Convert STL to 3MF when colour, material or unit information needs to travel with the geometry, since STL has nowhere to put any of it.
3DS to STL questions people ask#
What is a 3DS file?
A 3DS file is the native scene format of Autodesk's 3D Studio DOS, released in 1990, storing mesh geometry, texture references and lighting in a binary, chunk-based structure. It's still widely found in older asset libraries because so much content was authored in that era.
Why won't my 3DS file open with all its vertices?
The 3DS format has a hard limit of 65,536 vertices and faces per mesh, dating back to its DOS-era design. A model that exceeds that has to be split into multiple meshes before it's saved as 3DS, or the excess geometry gets cut or corrupted.
Is 3DS the same as 3ds Max's native format?
No. 3DS was 3D Studio DOS's format, but 3ds Max, its successor released in 1996, uses a different native format, .max, that has none of the old vertex or naming limits. 3DS survives today mainly as an interchange format rather than any current application's native one.
Can 3DS store textures?
Yes, a 3DS file can reference texture maps for its materials, though texture filenames are restricted to the old 8.3 DOS naming convention. Material names are capped at 16 characters, which can truncate names coming from a modern export.
