3GP to MXF Converter

FileFlip converts 3GP to MXF entirely inside your browser, using FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. The file is never uploaded to a server: it is read off your disk, converted on your own machine, and saved back by the browser. That means no file-size limit, no queue and no account.

How do I convert a 3GP file to MXF?#

  1. Drop your 3GP file onto the converter at the top of this page, or click it to pick one from your computer. You can add as many as you like.
  2. Leave the target set to MXF and the conversion starts on its own. FileFlip downloads 30.8 MB of WebAssembly the first time and nothing after that, then runs FFmpeg on your own machine.
  3. Save the MXF file. Your browser writes it straight to your downloads folder, because there was never a server holding it.

Does converting 3GP to MXF lose quality?#

It depends on what is inside the file. 3GP is a container rather than a codec, so whether the MXF conversion copies the streams across untouched or re-encodes them is decided by the codecs that particular file happens to use.

Is it safe to convert 3GP files online?#

Yes, because nothing is uploaded. FileFlip converts 3GP files inside the browser tab you already have open, using WebAssembly builds of the same engines a desktop converter would install. Your file is read from your own disk into the page's memory, and no request carrying it is ever made.

You do not have to take that on trust. Open your browser's network panel, run a conversion, and you will see the engine come down and your file go nowhere. There is no upload, no server-side copy, no retention window, and no account tied to what you converted.

How FileFlip works lists every engine, its version and its download size, and shows how to check for yourself that nothing leaves your machine.

What 3GP to MXF actually does to the file#

Converting 3GP to MXF runs on FFmpeg, downloads 30.8 MB of WebAssembly the first time and nothing after that, re-encodes or copies through depending on the codecs in the file, and drops encoded streams.

What is a 3GP file?#

A 3GP file holds video and audio in the multimedia container the 3GPP standards body defined for GSM-lineage mobile phones, a stripped-down MPEG-4 Part 12 structure sized for slow cellular links.

There's rarely a reason to keep new video as 3GP; it matters mainly for footage already recorded that way on an older phone.

Convert 3GP to MP4 to get footage playing smoothly on current phones, computers, and browsers, none of which prioritize 3GP support anymore.

What is an MXF file?#

An MXF file wraps video, audio and extensive metadata for broadcast and post-production, a SMPTE container designed to move footage between cameras, editing systems and archives without losing timecode, captions or provenance along the way.

Use MXF for broadcast delivery, tapeless camera ingest or any post-production pipeline where downstream tools expect the metadata and operational pattern a plain container cannot carry.

Convert MXF to MP4 or MOV once a project leaves the broadcast or post-production chain, for review copies, web delivery, or anywhere the metadata MXF exists to carry is no longer needed.

3GP to MXF questions people ask#

What produces a 3GP file?

3GP files come from older GSM-lineage mobile phones recording video, from MMS video messages, and from early smartphone camera apps before MP4 became the default. Feature phones from the 2000s and early 2010s are the most common source of 3GP footage still around.

Why won't my 3GP file play?

Recent versions of iOS and some desktop software dropped native 3GP support, and files using AMR audio specifically fail in players and editors that don't include an AMR decoder. VLC plays nearly all 3GP files directly, AMR audio included.

What should I convert a 3GP file to?

Convert 3GP to MP4 for playback on any current device. MP4 carries the same footage without the low-bitrate ceiling and codec gaps that made 3GP awkward outside of old phones.

Is 3GP the same as MP4?

3GP is a cut-down variant of the same MPEG-4 Part 12 family MP4 belongs to, built for older phones and slow mobile networks with lower resolution and bitrate limits. An MP4 player can often open a 3GP file, but the reverse isn't guaranteed since MP4 supports codecs and features 3GP doesn't.
