What is an ASF file?#
An ASF file is Microsoft's Advanced Systems Format container, the streaming-oriented wrapper that holds Windows Media Video and Windows Media Audio content along with its own metadata and digital rights management.

ASF is the container underneath Windows Media Video and Windows Media Audio, so it comes from software that exports WMV or WMA, from Windows Media Encoder recordings, and occasionally from a file saved with the plain .asf extension when it holds mixed content rather than just one stream type.
Why won't my ASF or WMV file play?
The most common cause outside Windows is a missing codec, since ASF playback support on macOS, Linux, and mobile is limited to players like VLC that bundle their own decoder. The other common cause is Windows Media DRM: a file licensed to a specific machine or account won't play anywhere else, and won't play at all once the license server is gone.
Is ASF the same as WMV?
ASF is the container and WMV is the video codec most commonly found inside it; a .wmv file is technically an ASF file with video content and the more specific extension. The .asf extension itself is used when the file mixes content types or when the software writing it doesn't distinguish audio from video.
