What is a CAF file?#

A CAF file holds audio in Apple's Core Audio Format, introduced in 2005 to replace AIFF and WAV on the Mac because its 64-bit chunk sizes have no practical file size or duration limit.

Keep audio as CAF while it stays inside Apple's own tools, such as Logic Pro, GarageBand, or an iOS app's own audio recordings, where the format's size and codec flexibility are used directly.

Convert CAF to WAV or M4A when the audio needs to leave the Apple ecosystem, since most non-Apple software has no built-in way to open it.

What is an OGA file?#

An OGA file is the same Ogg container as an OGG file, but under Xiph.Org's extension convention it marks audio using any codec, Vorbis, Opus, FLAC or Speex, rather than being reserved for Vorbis specifically.

Use OGA when you need an extension that correctly signals "Ogg audio" without asserting the file is specifically Vorbis.

Convert OGA to a single-codec format like MP3 or FLAC when a destination app infers the codec from the extension, since many tools still assume .oga could hold anything.

What creates a CAF file?

CAF files come from Apple's own audio software, including Logic Pro, GarageBand, and any iOS or macOS app that records audio through Apple's Core Audio APIs. Apple adopted CAF as its own format specifically to avoid the 4 GB size limit that WAV and AIFF both carry.

What still opens CAF files?

QuickTime Player, Logic Pro, and GarageBand open CAF natively on macOS, and VLC decodes it on Windows and Linux as well. Very little non-Apple software supports it directly.

What should I convert a CAF file to?

Convert CAF to WAV for lossless compatibility with editing software, or to M4A for a smaller file that still plays on non-Apple devices. Whether the conversion loses quality depends on what codec the CAF file already holds inside; a CAF containing uncompressed PCM converts to WAV with no loss at all.

What's the difference between OGG and OGA?

OGA and OGG are the exact same Ogg container format; only the extension differs. Xiph.Org's convention, in use since 2007, reserves .ogg for Vorbis-encoded audio specifically and uses .oga for Ogg audio that could be any codec, including FLAC or Opus, so an .oga file makes no promise about which codec is inside.
