DXF to GLB Converter

FileFlip converts DXF to GLB entirely inside your browser, using Assimp compiled to WebAssembly. The file is never uploaded to a server: it is read off your disk, converted on your own machine, and saved back by the browser. That means no file-size limit, no queue and no account.

How do I convert a DXF file to GLB?#

  1. Drop your DXF file onto the converter at the top of this page, or click it to pick one from your computer. You can add as many as you like.
  2. Leave the target set to GLB and the conversion starts on its own. FileFlip downloads 11.2 MB of WebAssembly the first time and nothing after that, then runs Assimp on your own machine.
  3. Save the GLB file. Your browser writes it straight to your downloads folder, because there was never a server holding it.

Does converting DXF to GLB lose quality?#

Not in the sense of pixels or samples. Converting DXF to GLB rebuilds the file in GLB's own model rather than re-encoding it, so everything GLB can represent comes through exactly and anything it cannot has to be dropped. Expect the geometry to be exact, and anything the target has no place for, such as a rig, to be left behind.

Is it safe to convert DXF files online?#

Yes, because nothing is uploaded. FileFlip converts DXF files inside the browser tab you already have open, using WebAssembly builds of the same engines a desktop converter would install. Your file is read from your own disk into the page's memory, and no request carrying it is ever made.

You do not have to take that on trust. Open your browser's network panel, run a conversion, and you will see the engine come down and your file go nowhere. There is no upload, no server-side copy, no retention window, and no account tied to what you converted.

How FileFlip works lists every engine, its version and its download size, and shows how to check for yourself that nothing leaves your machine.

What DXF to GLB actually does to the file#

Converting DXF to GLB runs on Assimp, downloads 11.2 MB of WebAssembly the first time and nothing after that, rebuilds the file in the target's own model.

What is a DXF file?#

A DXF file is Autodesk's tagged ASCII or binary interchange format for AutoCAD drawings, introduced with AutoCAD 1.0 in December 1982 to move CAD data between systems that couldn't read AutoCAD's native DWG format directly.

Use DXF to move a 2D drawing between CAD packages that don't share a native format, which is exactly what it was built for.

Convert DXF to a 3D interchange format like OBJ or glTF once the goal shifts from CAD exchange to rendering or 3D printing.

What is a GLB file?#

A GLB file is glTF's binary packaging, developed by the Khronos Group, wrapping the JSON scene description together with its geometry buffers and textures into one self-contained file instead of a JSON document with separate buffer and image files beside it.

Use GLB whenever a model has to be handed to a web viewer, AR app or game engine as a single upload.

Convert GLB back to glTF's JSON form only when something inside the file needs to be read or edited directly.

DXF to GLB questions people ask#

What is a DXF file used for?

A DXF file moves CAD drawings between systems that can't open AutoCAD's native DWG format directly. Autodesk introduced it alongside AutoCAD 1.0 in 1982 specifically as a documented interchange format, and it remains the closest thing CAD has to a universal exchange format.

Is DXF 2D or 3D?

DXF supports both, but it's used far more in practice for 2D drawings; its documentation for certain 3D object types, such as ACIS solids and regions, is incomplete, which limits how reliably 3D data survives a round trip between different CAD applications.

What's the difference between DXF and DWG?

DWG is AutoCAD's native, proprietary binary file format, while DXF is Autodesk's published interchange format meant to represent the same drawing data in a form other software can read without needing AutoCAD's own file structure. A DXF export from AutoCAD aims to be an exact representation of the DWG it came from.

Can I open a DXF file in a text editor?

Yes, if it's the ASCII variant, which is what most software writes by default. An ASCII DXF is a tagged text file, readable line by line, though it's verbose enough that even a simple drawing produces a large file. A binary DXF, supported since AutoCAD Release 10, is not readable as text.
