Why won't my Kindle open an EPUB file?

EPUB 3, released in 2011, added fixed-layout pages for comics and picture books, MathML for equations, and support for embedded audio and video, so a modern EPUB file can do things a 2010-era reading app was never built to handle.
Can I remove DRM from an EPUB file to convert it?
