What is an HTML file?#
An HTML file is a plain-text document of tagged markup describing headings, paragraphs, links, tables and images, meant to reflow to fit whatever browser or screen renders it.
Use HTML when a document needs to reflow in a browser or serve as a structured intermediate step between other document formats.

What is an RTF file?#
An RTF file encodes styled text as plain ASCII, using backslash control words like \b and \par instead of binary formatting codes, a design Microsoft published in 1987 specifically so word processors that agreed on nothing else could still exchange formatted documents.
Use RTF to move styled text between word processors from different vendors or eras that don't reliably agree on any other format.

What is an HTML file?
An HTML file is a plain-text document written in HyperText Markup Language, tagging content as headings, paragraphs, links, tables or images so a browser knows how to lay it out. Tim Berners-Lee created it in 1993, and it remains the markup every web browser renders.
Does an HTML file include its images?
Not by default. An HTML file normally references images by file path or URL rather than storing the image data itself, so moving the HTML file alone leaves those images behind unless they are copied along with it or embedded directly as base64 data URIs.
Is HTML a fixed-layout or reflowable format?
HTML is reflowable: it describes a page's structure and lets the browser decide how to lay it out for the available screen width, rather than pinning text to an exact position the way a fixed-layout PDF page does. That is also why the same HTML file looks different on a phone than on a desktop monitor.
Can I open an HTML file without an internet connection?
Yes, an HTML file on a local disk opens directly in any browser without a network connection, though anything it references by URL, such as an externally hosted image, font or script, will not load unless a copy exists locally too.
