What is an M4V file?#
An M4V file is an MP4 file under a different extension, used by Apple for video sold through the iTunes Store, where it may also be wrapped in FairPlay encryption that ties playback to an Apple account.
Leave a file as M4V when it came from the iTunes Store and will be watched in Apple's own apps, where the chapters and subtitle tracks work as intended.
Convert an M4V you created yourself to MP4 when a device refuses it on the extension, which is the usual reason the file will not open.
What is an MP4 file?#
An MP4 file holds video, audio, subtitle and chapter tracks together in the MPEG-4 Part 14 container, the structure ISO standardised from Apple's QuickTime format and the way most video is stored and shared today.
Choose MP4 when the file has to play somewhere you do not control, which covers anything uploaded, emailed or handed to another person.
Convert an MP4 to something else when the destination is not a player: pulling out the audio, making a GIF, or moving into Matroska to keep several subtitle and audio tracks in one file.
M4V to MP4 questions people ask#
What is the difference between M4V and MP4?
There is no structural difference. M4V is Apple's extension for what is otherwise an MPEG-4 Part 14 file, chosen so iTunes could tell its own video apart from everything else. A DRM-free M4V holds the same H.264 and AAC streams an MP4 does, and renaming it to .mp4 is usually all it takes to open it elsewhere. The one thing the extension can signal is FairPlay encryption.
Can I convert a DRM-protected M4V to MP4?
No converter can turn a FairPlay-protected M4V into an MP4, because the video inside is encrypted rather than merely wrapped. Apple's DRM ties decryption to an authorised Apple account and device, so tools that read the file see encrypted data and stop. Purchases only play in Apple's own apps, which is what buying rather than owning the file means in practice.
Is M4V a codec?
M4V is a container, not a codec, and the same container MP4 uses. What is inside is almost always H.264 video with AAC or Dolby Digital audio, since that is what Apple encoded iTunes video as. Playback problems with M4V are usually about the extension or DRM rather than the codec, which is unusually predictable for a video file.
Will an M4V file play on Android or Windows?
An M4V without DRM plays anywhere MP4 does, including Android and Windows, though some players refuse to try because they do not recognise the extension. Changing it to .mp4 or remuxing the file solves that in a few seconds with no quality loss, since nothing about the video needs to change. Files still carrying FairPlay only play in Apple's apps.
