What is a MESH file?#

A MESH file is the binary model format of the OGRE rendering engine, a C++ library Steve Streeting began building around 1999, packing one or more submeshes' vertex and index buffers together with references to a skeleton file and any level-of-detail data OGRE's scene manager needs at render time.

Use MESH when a model needs to load directly into OGRE or an engine built on it without a runtime import step.

What is an STEP file?#

An STP file holds a STEP product model in ISO 10303's plain-text exchange syntax, encoding exact boundary-representation solids, surfaces and curves rather than a triangulated mesh.

Use STEP whenever exact CAD geometry, not an approximated mesh, needs to move between two different CAD systems.

What is a MESH file?

A MESH file is a binary 3D model in the format the OGRE rendering engine uses, storing one or more submeshes' geometry along with a reference to a skeleton file and any level-of-detail data OGRE's scene manager needs. Steve Streeting's OGRE project defined the format alongside the engine.

Why does a MESH file need a separate skeleton file?

OGRE splits a model's geometry from its skeleton so the same skeleton can be shared or swapped between different meshes; the .mesh file only stores a reference to the .skeleton file it needs, rather than embedding the bone hierarchy. Both files have to be present for an animated model to work.

Can I open a MESH file outside OGRE?

There's little support for OGRE's .mesh format outside the engine itself and tools built specifically for it, such as OgreMeshViewer or the OgreXMLConverter that turns it into readable XML. Converting to a more widely supported format like OBJ or glTF is the practical route for opening it elsewhere.

What does STP stand for?

STP is the file extension for STEP, the Standard for the Exchange of Product model data, formally ISO 10303. It's the neutral format mechanical CAD systems use to hand solid models to each other.
