What is an MPEG file?#
.mpeg and .mpg name the same MPEG program stream under two spellings, a split that goes back to the three-character extension limit MS-DOS and early Windows imposed on file names.
Keep the .mpeg spelling when a workflow, script, or archive convention specifically expects the full four-letter extension; the video data behaves identically either way.
Convert MPEG to MP4 for the same reason an MPG needs converting: MPEG-2 is bulky, poorly supported by browsers, and increasingly undecodable on Windows without an extra codec.
What is an MTS file?#
An MTS file holds the same BDAV MPEG-2 transport stream as M2TS, written under the extension the AVCHD standard assigns to footage recorded straight onto a camcorder's memory card.

MPEG to MTS questions people ask#
What's the difference between .mpeg and .mpg?
None in the video data. Both extensions point to the same MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 program stream, so a .mpeg file and a .mpg file of the same source contain identical frames and audio, only the extension text differs.
Why does MPEG have two spellings of its extension?
MS-DOS and early Windows used the FAT filesystem's 8.3 naming rule, which capped every extension at three characters, so the four-letter '.mpeg' the standards committee used didn't fit. Software on those systems wrote '.mpg' instead, while Unix and early Macintosh systems, with no such limit, kept the full '.mpeg' spelling.
Why won't my MPEG file play?
The most common cause is Windows 10 or 11 missing the MPEG-2 decoder, which Microsoft stopped bundling and now sells separately as the MPEG-2 Video Extension. Installing it, or opening the file in VLC instead, fixes playback without touching the file itself.
Should I rename .mpeg to .mpg?
Renaming only changes the filename, not the bytes inside, so a renamed file opens exactly the same. .mpg is worth using where an older tool or upload form insists on three-letter extensions; otherwise either spelling works everywhere modern.
