What M2TS does well
- Each 188-byte MPEG-TS packet gets a 4-byte timestamp added, so software can seek and play back at the disc's exact recorded rate rather than relying on live broadcast timing
- Holds H.264, MPEG-2, or VC-1 video with uncompressed PCM, Dolby, or DTS audio, matching what commercial Blu-ray discs actually author
- Carries PGS subtitle streams natively, which is how Blu-ray subtitles stay pixel-accurate instead of relying on rendered text
- Is the format professional editing and authoring tools output directly, so it round-trips through a Blu-ray production pipeline without conversion
Where M2TS falls short
- Chapter points live in a disc's separate playlist and clip-info files rather than inside the M2TS stream itself, so an extracted M2TS loses its chapter markers
- Commercial discs wrap the video in AACS copy protection at the disc level, which an extracted M2TS file does not carry or bypass on its own
- Far less universally supported than MP4 or MKV outside of Blu-ray-specific software and hardware players
- The added timestamp overhead makes an M2TS somewhat larger than the equivalent plain MPEG-TS or MP4
Keep footage as M2TS while it's still part of a Blu-ray authoring or playback pipeline that expects that exact stream structure.
