MS3D File Format (.ms3d)

An MS3D file is the native binary project of MilkShape 3D, a shareware low-polygon modeller, storing vertices, textured triangles grouped into meshes, materials, a joint skeleton and keyframe animation in one file.

What a .ms3d file can hold#

These are the things a MS3D file either supports or does not, and they are what decides whether a conversion keeps everything or quietly drops something.

Strengths and limitations of MS3D#

What MS3D does well

  • Every section is prefixed with an item count, so a parser can jump straight to the chunk it needs
  • Carries a full joint skeleton with per-vertex weights, not just static geometry
  • The format's simplicity made it easy for hobbyist tools to add support, which is why so many game-modding utilities still read it

Where MS3D falls short

  • MilkShape 3D hasn't had a substantial update since 2009, though it's still sold on Steam
  • No colour profile, units, or scene metadata; the file is limited to mesh, skeleton and animation
  • Modern DCC applications need a plugin or a separate converter to read it, since none support it natively

Keep a model as MS3D while it's still being built, rigged or animated inside MilkShape 3D itself.

Convert MS3D to OBJ or FBX once a model needs to move into a modern engine or modeller, since almost nothing outside MilkShape 3D reads it directly.

How to open a .ms3d file#

A .ms3d file opens in the programs below, grouped by the platform you are on. If you would rather not install anything, FileFlip converts MS3D into a format your machine already opens, and it does it in the browser tab rather than on a server.

MS3D questions people ask#

What is an MS3D file?

An MS3D file is a MilkShape 3D project: a low-polygon mesh with materials, a joint skeleton and keyframe animation, stored in one binary file. MilkShape 3D built its reputation on games like Half-Life and Quake, where its low price and simple vertex-based workflow made it a popular tool for modders building custom characters and weapons.

What software opens MS3D files?

MilkShape 3D itself is the primary application, still available cheaply on Steam despite having had no major update since 2009. Outside of MilkShape 3D, an MS3D file usually needs a dedicated importer plugin or a converter, since mainstream modelling and game-engine tools don't read it out of the box.

Why is MilkShape 3D still associated with game modding?

MilkShape 3D was cheap, ran on modest hardware, and stuck to a simple low-polygon, vertex-based workflow that suited the character and weapon models of late-1990s and early-2000s games. That combination made it the default modelling tool for a generation of Half-Life and Quake-engine mods, and MS3D remained the format many of those community tools were built around.

Converting MS3D files#

FileFlip does not write .ms3d files, so nothing on the site converts into this format. It works as a source only.

Every conversion runs inside your browser. The file is read from your disk, the work happens on your own machine, and nothing is uploaded. How FileFlip works names the engine behind each family and how to verify that for yourself.
