What is a 3FR file?#

A 3FR file stores raw, minimally processed sensor data captured by a Hasselblad medium-format digital camera or digital back, a proprietary format Hasselblad introduced in 2006 with the H2D.

Shoot 3FR when working on a Hasselblad system and processing in Phocus, where the format's full sensor data and metadata are used as intended.

Convert 3FR to DNG or TIFF once editing is finished, since Phocus is the software most reliably guaranteed to read it and most archives and labs expect a more interoperable format.

What is a BMP2 file?#

BMP2 is ImageMagick's name for a Windows bitmap saved with the original 12-byte BITMAPCOREHEADER from 1987's OS/2 1.x, an encoding choice rather than a different file format, so the result is an ordinary uncompressed .bmp using the oldest and most limited header structure.

Choose BMP2 only when a specific legacy OS/2 or early-1990s Windows program requires the old-style bitmap header.

Save as standard BMP or BMP3 for anything opened on a modern system, since BMP2's extra compatibility buys nothing there.
