What is an MPG file?#
An MPG file holds MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 video multiplexed into the MPEG program stream, the container built for playback from a local disc or hard drive rather than a live broadcast feed.
Leave a file as MPG when it already came from a DVD-era source and nothing needs it to be smaller or to play in a browser.

What produces an MPG file?
MPG files come from DVD-era camcorders, TV capture cards, older video editing software exports, and Video CDs. Anything encoded to the MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 program stream before H.264 became the default lands as an MPG.
Why won't my MPG file play on Windows?
Windows 10 and 11 dropped the built-in MPEG-2 decoder, so Windows Media Player and the Movies & TV app show an error or a blank screen until the MPEG-2 Video Extension is installed from the Microsoft Store, which costs a small fee on most PCs. VLC bundles its own decoder and plays the same file without any extension.
What should I convert an MPG file to?
Convert an MPG to MP4 for general use. MP4 with H.264 keeps the video watchable at a much smaller file size and plays natively in every current browser, phone, and operating system, none of which is true of the original MPEG-2 program stream.
Is MPG the same as MP4?
No. MPG holds older MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 video, while MP4 is a newer container built around H.264 or H.265. The codecs, compression efficiency, and device support are different enough that converting between them re-encodes the video rather than just repackaging it.
