What is an MPG file?#
An MPG file holds MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 video multiplexed into the MPEG program stream, the container built for playback from a local disc or hard drive rather than a live broadcast feed.

What produces an MPG file?
MPG files come from DVD-era camcorders, TV capture cards, older video editing software exports, and Video CDs. Anything encoded to the MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 program stream before H.264 became the default lands as an MPG.
Why won't my MPG file play on Windows?
Windows 10 and 11 dropped the built-in MPEG-2 decoder, so Windows Media Player and the Movies & TV app show an error or a blank screen until the MPEG-2 Video Extension is installed from the Microsoft Store, which costs a small fee on most PCs. VLC bundles its own decoder and plays the same file without any extension.
What should I convert an MPG file to?
