NEF to PDF Converter

FileFlip converts NEF to PDF entirely inside your browser, using ImageMagick and MuPDF compiled to WebAssembly. The file is never uploaded to a server: it is read off your disk, converted on your own machine, and saved back by the browser. That means no file-size limit, no queue and no account.

How do I convert a NEF file to PDF?#

  1. Drop your NEF file onto the converter at the top of this page, or click it to pick one from your computer. You can add as many as you like.
  2. Leave the target set to PDF and the conversion starts on its own. FileFlip downloads 24.1 MB of WebAssembly the first time and nothing after that, then runs ImageMagick and MuPDF on your own machine.
  3. Save the PDF file. Your browser writes it straight to your downloads folder, because there was never a server holding it.

Does converting NEF to PDF lose quality?#

No. The NEF picture is placed into the PDF document at its full resolution, so every pixel reaches it intact. What you give up is that it becomes a picture inside a document rather than text.

Is it safe to convert NEF files online?#

Yes, because nothing is uploaded. FileFlip converts NEF files inside the browser tab you already have open, using WebAssembly builds of the same engines a desktop converter would install. Your file is read from your own disk into the page's memory, and no request carrying it is ever made.

You do not have to take that on trust. Open your browser's network panel, run a conversion, and you will see the engine come down and your file go nowhere. There is no upload, no server-side copy, no retention window, and no account tied to what you converted.

How FileFlip works lists every engine, its version and its download size, and shows how to check for yourself that nothing leaves your machine.

What NEF to PDF actually does to the file#

Converting NEF to PDF runs on ImageMagick and MuPDF, downloads 24.1 MB of WebAssembly the first time and nothing after that, places the picture into the document at full resolution.

Worth knowing before you start:

  • camera raw is demosaiced with ImageMagick's defaults, which will not match the camera's own rendering
  • the picture is placed in the document as a picture; no text is recognised out of it
  • some cameras write lossily compressed raw, so the source is not always a complete sensor record

What is a NEF file?#

A NEF file holds the unprocessed readout from a Nikon camera's sensor inside a TIFF-based container, together with a JPEG preview and the Nikon maker note that records how the camera was set when the shutter fired.

Shoot NEF when exposure, white balance or highlight recovery may need to change after the fact, because the camera's JPEG has already discarded the data those edits draw on.

Convert NEF to JPEG once the editing is finished and the picture has to go somewhere ordinary such as a web upload or a print lab, or to DNG when the goal is an archive that does not depend on Nikon's format staying supported.

What is a PDF file?#

A PDF file records each character, image and line at a fixed position on the page, independent of any word processor's styles or fonts, which is what makes it print and display identically wherever it opens.

Use PDF to send a finished document to someone who needs to see the exact layout, on any device, without being able to accidentally change it.

Convert PDF to DOCX or another editable format when the real task is changing the wording, not just reading it, and accept that the layout will reflow rather than stay pinned in place.

NEF to PDF questions people ask#

What software opens NEF files?

NEF files open in Nikon's own NX Studio, which is a free download and reads NEF and NRW but no other raw format. Adobe Camera Raw, Lightroom Classic and Photoshop read NEF, as do Capture One and the open-source processors RawTherapee and darktable, and macOS shows NEF previews in Photos and Preview without extra software.

Does converting NEF to DNG lose quality?

Converting a NEF to DNG carries the sensor data across unchanged, because the conversion rewrites the container instead of re-rendering the image. What goes away is Nikon's own software: NX Studio opens NEF and NRW but not DNG, so the camera's Picture Control rendering is no longer on offer for that file, and Adobe's DNG Converter has to already support the camera model before it will convert at all.

Why does Nikon use NEF instead of DNG?

Nikon has never offered DNG as an in-camera setting, and NEF carries Nikon-specific data that Nikon's software depends on, including Picture Control instruction sets and maker note sections the camera encrypts. Anyone who wants DNG converts after the fact with Adobe's DNG Converter, which Nikon plays no part in.

What is the difference between NEF and NRW files?

NEF is what Nikon's DSLRs and Z-series mirrorless cameras write, while NRW is the raw format a small set of Coolpix compact and bridge cameras write, starting with the P6000 in 2008. Both sit in the same TIFF-based structure, but NRW signs its white balance block differently, drops the linearization table NEF carries, and keeps a JPEG-compressed image in the file's first directory, which is how tools such as ExifTool tell the two apart.
