What is a PPTX file?#
A PPTX file is a ZIP archive of XML parts, one per slide plus shared layouts, themes and media, in the same Office Open XML family as DOCX, and it has been PowerPoint's default format since PowerPoint 2007.
Use PPTX for any presentation still being edited, since slides, speaker notes, animations and embedded media all round-trip between PowerPoint, Impress and Keynote.

What is a JPEG file?#
.jpeg and .jpg are the same JPEG-compressed image format under two different extension spellings, a split that dates to the three-character extension limit of MS-DOS and early Windows.
Save an image as .jpeg over .jpg when a system, script, or personal convention specifically expects the full four-letter extension; the image data itself doesn't care which one is used.
Rename or export as .jpg instead of .jpeg when a target system, upload form, or older piece of software only recognizes the three-letter extension, which is the more common expectation today.
PPTX to JPEG questions people ask#
Can I open a PPTX file without PowerPoint?
Yes. LibreOffice Impress and Google Slides open and save PPTX natively, and Apple Keynote imports it, converting the file to Keynote's own format on the way in. Standard slide layouts, text and images generally come through intact; heavy animation and transition effects are the most likely thing to look different.
Why did converting a Word document to PPTX put one heading on each slide?
That's how a document-to-PPTX conversion decides where slides break: each top-level heading in the source document becomes the title of a new slide, with the following text placed underneath it. It produces a reasonable first-draft outline, not a finished deck, so expect to redistribute content and add real slide design afterward.
Does converting PPTX to PDF keep the animations?
No. PDF has no concept of animation or slide transitions, so converting PPTX to PDF captures each slide's static appearance, typically its final animation state, and discards the motion entirely.
What's the difference between PPTX and the old PPT format?
