Where PPTX falls short

Complex animations and transitions frequently don't survive a round trip through another application's PPTX writer
A deck produced by converting a document turns each top-level heading into a slide title with no sense of what should be a bullet versus a new slide, so it always needs a human editing pass
Embedded video and audio can bloat the file well past what email attachments allow
Custom fonts that aren't embedded in the file are silently substituted on a machine that doesn't have them installed

Use PPTX for any presentation still being edited, since slides, speaker notes, animations and embedded media all round-trip between PowerPoint, Impress and Keynote.

PPTX questions people ask#

Can I open a PPTX file without PowerPoint?

Yes. LibreOffice Impress and Google Slides open and save PPTX natively, and Apple Keynote imports it, converting the file to Keynote's own format on the way in. Standard slide layouts, text and images generally come through intact; heavy animation and transition effects are the most likely thing to look different.

Why did converting a Word document to PPTX put one heading on each slide?

That's how a document-to-PPTX conversion decides where slides break: each top-level heading in the source document becomes the title of a new slide, with the following text placed underneath it. It produces a reasonable first-draft outline, not a finished deck, so expect to redistribute content and add real slide design afterward.

Does converting PPTX to PDF keep the animations?

No. PDF has no concept of animation or slide transitions, so converting PPTX to PDF captures each slide's static appearance, typically its final animation state, and discards the motion entirely.

What's the difference between PPTX and the old PPT format?

PPT is Microsoft's binary presentation format used through PowerPoint 2003. PPTX, introduced with PowerPoint 2007, is a ZIP archive of XML built to the Office Open XML standard, which makes it smaller and readable by software other than PowerPoint.
