Worth knowing before you start:
- camera raw is demosaiced with ImageMagick's defaults, which will not match the camera's own rendering
- some cameras write lossily compressed raw, so the source is not always a complete sensor record
What is an RMF file?#
An RMF file with image content is handled by treating its bytes as raw camera sensor data, since ImageMagick routes the .rmf extension to its DNG decoder rather than to a decoder built for an independently documented RMF image format.
There's no established reason to create a file as RMF; treat one only as raw camera sensor data if that's confirmed to be its actual source.
Convert an .rmf file to DNG or JPG as soon as it needs to open outside of ImageMagick's raw-image pipeline, since almost nothing else recognizes the extension as an image.
What is a RAS file?#
A RAS file is a Sun Raster bitmap, the raw framebuffer image format Sun Microsystems built into SunOS workstations, and it is byte-for-byte identical to the format most tools also recognise under the .sun extension.
Open a RAS file when it comes from legacy Sun or Solaris workstation software, or from an old dataset captured directly off a SunOS framebuffer.
Convert RAS to PNG or TIFF for anything beyond archival viewing, since almost no current software or web platform accepts Sun Raster natively.
RMF to RAS questions people ask#
What is an RMF file?
As an image, an RMF file is data that ImageMagick decodes using its DNG raw-camera decoder, because no independently published RMF image format specification exists. The .rmf extension is also used, unrelatedly, for Valve level-editor files, Beatnik MIDI music files and Adobe rights-management licenses, so a file's actual contents depend entirely on what produced it.
What program opens RMF image files?
ImageMagick and libraries built on it will attempt to open an RMF file as raw camera sensor data through the same decoder used for DNG files. Because there's no confirmed RMF image specification, there's no other software known to open it as an image.
Why won't my RMF file open as an image?
Unlike JPG or PNG, .rmf is not a fixed, documented image format, so a decoder only succeeds if the file's bytes happen to match the raw sensor layout ImageMagick's DNG decoder expects. A file with this extension might just as easily be a Hammer level file, a MIDI-based audio file, or a rights-management license, none of which are images at all.
Is a RAS file the same as a SUN file?
Yes. A RAS file and a SUN file are the same Sun Raster format, identified by the same magic number and header layout, just saved under two different extensions that various tools have used over the years.
