Worth knowing before you start:

  • camera raw is demosaiced with ImageMagick's defaults, which will not match the camera's own rendering
  • some cameras write lossily compressed raw, so the source is not always a complete sensor record

What is an SRF file?#

An SRF file stores raw sensor data from an early Sony Cyber-shot camera such as the DSC-F828, with parts of the file encrypted so that, originally, only Sony's own software could fully decode the white balance and color data.

SRF only exists as the format an old Cyber-shot camera such as the DSC-F828 already wrote; there's no reason to choose it today.

Convert SRF files to DNG or JPEG, since current raw processors have far better support for those than for Sony's original encrypted raw format.

What is an HDR file?#

An HDR file stores a high-dynamic-range raster image using Radiance's RGBE encoding, which packs red, green and blue mantissas with one shared exponent per pixel so a scene can hold a far wider range of brightness than a standard 8-bit image.

Reach for HDR when you need a compact high-dynamic-range environment map or lighting reference that most 3D tools and renderers can read without a plugin.

Convert HDR to OpenEXR when a VFX pipeline needs true floating-point precision, an alpha channel or multiple layers in one file, or convert it to JPEG or PNG once the image has been tone-mapped for a normal display.

What Sony camera creates SRF files?

SRF files come from early Sony Cyber-shot cameras, most notably the DSC-F828, which was among the first Sony cameras to offer raw capture. Sony moved on to the SR2 and later ARW formats within a few years.

Why do colors look wrong when I open an SRF file?

SRF files from Sony's early Cyber-shot cameras have parts of the file encrypted, including white balance and color data, so software that hasn't worked around that encryption can decode the image but not its correct color rendering.

Can current raw software open SRF files?

Some can. Adobe Camera Raw and Lightroom Classic retain legacy support for SRF, and open-source tools like darktable and RawTherapee decode it through libraries that reverse-engineered Sony's encryption, but support is far thinner than for Sony's current ARW format.

What is an HDR file used for?

An HDR file most often stores an environment map or lighting reference for 3D rendering, since Radiance's RGBE encoding was built for the Radiance lighting-simulation software. Photographers also use the .hdr extension for panoramas merged from several exposures, before tone-mapping the result down to a normal image.
