Strengths and limitations of AC3#
What AC3 does well
- Carries up to 5.1 discrete channels in one bitstream, which is why it survives untouched as a DVD and Blu-ray audio track
- AV receivers decode it directly over S/PDIF or HDMI passthrough without the source device doing any decoding
- Bitrate scales down to 32 kbit/s mono, so it also covers simple broadcast and dialogue-only tracks
Where AC3 falls short
- Carries no tagging system, so an AC3 file on its own has no title, artist, or track metadata
- Ordinary music players and phones do not decode it without a codec pack or an app built on FFmpeg
- As a lossy codec it cannot be converted to FLAC or another lossless format without keeping the generation loss already baked in
Keep audio as AC3 when it is a DVD, Blu-ray, or broadcast track destined for a home theater receiver that decodes Dolby Digital natively.

An AC3 file is almost always extracted from a DVD, a Blu-ray disc, or a digital TV broadcast, all of which store their surround-sound track as a Dolby Digital bitstream. Ripping software and video editors pull that track out as a standalone .ac3 file when they separate audio from video.
What can still play an AC3 file?
AC3 plays natively in VLC and mpv on any desktop operating system, and in AV receivers that accept S/PDIF or HDMI passthrough. Windows Media Player and most phone audio apps cannot decode it without an added codec, since AC3 was built for home theater equipment rather than general music playback.
What should I convert an AC3 file to?
