AC3 to VOC Converter

FileFlip converts AC3 to VOC entirely inside your browser, using FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. The file is never uploaded to a server: it is read off your disk, converted on your own machine, and saved back by the browser. That means no file-size limit, no queue and no account.

How do I convert an AC3 file to VOC?#

  1. Drop your AC3 file onto the converter at the top of this page, or click it to pick one from your computer. You can add as many as you like.
  2. Leave the target set to VOC and the conversion starts on its own. FileFlip downloads 30.8 MB of WebAssembly the first time and nothing after that, then runs FFmpeg on your own machine.
  3. Save the VOC file. Your browser writes it straight to your downloads folder, because there was never a server holding it.

Does converting AC3 to VOC lose quality?#

It depends on what is inside the file. AC3 is a container rather than a codec, so whether the VOC conversion copies the streams across untouched or re-encodes them is decided by the codecs that particular file happens to use.

Is it safe to convert AC3 files online?#

Yes, because nothing is uploaded. FileFlip converts AC3 files inside the browser tab you already have open, using WebAssembly builds of the same engines a desktop converter would install. Your file is read from your own disk into the page's memory, and no request carrying it is ever made.

You do not have to take that on trust. Open your browser's network panel, run a conversion, and you will see the engine come down and your file go nowhere. There is no upload, no server-side copy, no retention window, and no account tied to what you converted.

How FileFlip works lists every engine, its version and its download size, and shows how to check for yourself that nothing leaves your machine.

What AC3 to VOC actually does to the file#

What is an AC3 file?#

An AC3 file holds a Dolby Digital bitstream, the compressed multi-channel audio format Dolby Laboratories introduced in 1991 for cinema and later carried onto DVD, Blu-ray discs, and digital television broadcasts.

Keep audio as AC3 when it is a DVD, Blu-ray, or broadcast track destined for a home theater receiver that decodes Dolby Digital natively.

Convert AC3 to AAC, MP3, or WAV when the audio needs to play on a phone, a laptop, or in a web page, none of which decode Dolby Digital on their own.

What is a VOC file?#

A VOC file holds audio in Creative Voice File format, the format Creative Labs introduced alongside the original Sound Blaster card in 1989 for storing digitized speech and sound effects in DOS-era games.

VOC mainly shows up today inside old DOS games and their emulation via DOSBox, where the original sound assets were never converted to a newer format.

Convert VOC to WAV to play or edit the audio in current software, since almost every modern audio tool reads WAV and very few still read VOC.

AC3 to VOC questions people ask#

What creates an AC3 file?

An AC3 file is almost always extracted from a DVD, a Blu-ray disc, or a digital TV broadcast, all of which store their surround-sound track as a Dolby Digital bitstream. Ripping software and video editors pull that track out as a standalone .ac3 file when they separate audio from video.

What can still play an AC3 file?

AC3 plays natively in VLC and mpv on any desktop operating system, and in AV receivers that accept S/PDIF or HDMI passthrough. Windows Media Player and most phone audio apps cannot decode it without an added codec, since AC3 was built for home theater equipment rather than general music playback.

What should I convert an AC3 file to?

Convert AC3 to AAC or MP3 for playback on phones and in browsers, or to WAV if the audio needs to be edited. The Dolby Digital format is lossy, so nothing is regained by converting to a lossless format afterward; pick the target based on where the file needs to play, not on preserving quality that already had to be discarded.

What creates a VOC file?

VOC files come from Creative Labs' own Sound Blaster recording software and from DOS-era games that shipped their speech and sound effects in this format, since VOC was the native audio format for early Sound Blaster cards.
