PPM File Format (.ppm)
A PPM file stores a full-colour raster image as a sequence of red, green and blue values, written either as plain ASCII digits or as raw binary bytes, in the Netpbm project's Portable Pixmap format.

What a .ppm file can hold#
These are the things a PPM file either supports or does not, and they are what decides whether a conversion keeps everything or quietly drops something.

Strengths and limitations of PPM#
What PPM does well
- Simple enough that a working decoder can be written in a few lines in almost any language
- The plain-text P3 variant is directly readable and editable in a text editor
- No lossy encoding step, so re-saving the same pixel data never changes a single value
Where PPM falls short
- No compression at all, so a PPM file is far larger than a JPEG or PNG of the same image
- No header fields for metadata such as EXIF data or an embedded colour profile
- No support for transparency or animation
Use PPM when piping images between command-line tools or test scripts that need a format simple enough to generate or inspect without an image library.
Convert PPM to PNG or JPEG once an image needs to be stored or shared outside a local pipeline, since PPM's lack of compression makes it impractical for that.
How to open a .ppm file#
A .ppm file opens in the programs below, grouped by the platform you are on. If you would rather not install anything, FileFlip converts PPM into a format your machine already opens, and it does it in the browser tab rather than on a server.
| Platform | Programs that open it |
|---|---|
| Windows | GIMP, IrfanView, ImageMagick |
| macOS | GIMP, ImageMagick |
| Linux | GIMP, ImageMagick, Netpbm tools |
| Web | FileFlip |
PPM questions people ask#
How do I open a PPM file?
A PPM file opens in GIMP, IrfanView, XnView or any tool built on ImageMagick or Python's Pillow library, since all of them read the format natively. Because a PPM file is uncompressed, it also opens correctly if you rename it and inspect it in a plain text editor when it's the ASCII P3 variant.
Why is my PPM file so large?
A PPM file stores every pixel's red, green and blue values directly with no compression, so its size scales with image dimensions alone rather than with how much detail the picture actually has. Converting to PNG or JPEG typically shrinks the same image dramatically.
What's the difference between P3 and P6 in a PPM file?
P3 and P6 are the two magic numbers a PPM file can start with: P3 marks the plain ASCII variant, where each colour value is written as readable decimal digits, and P6 marks the raw binary variant, where the same values are packed as bytes. Both describe identical pixel data and the same PPM format, just encoded differently.

Every conversion runs inside your browser. The file is read from your disk, the work happens on your own machine, and nothing is uploaded. How FileFlip works names the engine behind each family and how to verify that for yourself.
