What is a JPE file?#
A JPE file is a JPEG image saved with a less common three-letter extension, identical in every byte to a file ending in .jpg or .jpeg, dating from systems that limited filenames to three-character extensions.
There's no reason to choose JPE deliberately today; it exists only because early operating systems limited extensions to three characters, which .jpg already satisfies.
Rename or convert JPE to JPG when a website, app, or content system doesn't recognize the .jpe extension, since the underlying image needs no re-encoding to do it.
What is an ICML file?#
An ICML file is a single XML document holding one InDesign story's text and its paragraph and character style names, with no page geometry, meant to be opened in Adobe InCopy or imported into an existing InDesign layout rather than viewed on its own.
Use ICML to move styled text into an InDesign layout from a source that can generate structured XML, keeping paragraph and character styles intact instead of retyping the copy.

What is a JPE file?
A JPE file is a standard JPEG image with a less common three-letter extension; the format itself is identical to .jpg or .jpeg. The variant extension dates back to systems that limited file extensions to three characters.
Can I just rename a JPE file to JPG?
Yes. Renaming .jpe to .jpg changes nothing about the image data, since JPE and JPG are the same JPEG format under different extensions.
Why do some programs not recognize JPE files?
Some upload forms and applications check a file's extension against an allow-list rather than reading its actual contents, and .jpe is rare enough that it's often left off that list, even though the file is a normal JPEG image.
What application opens an ICML file?
Adobe InDesign and Adobe InCopy are effectively the only applications that open ICML files, since the format exists specifically to move a story's styled text between the two. There is no independent viewer for it outside Adobe's publishing tools.
