Strengths and limitations of JPE#

What JPE does well

Decodes with the exact same JPEG codec as .jpg, so there's no compatibility or quality difference
Still produced occasionally by older or embedded tools that trim extensions to three characters

Where JPE falls short

Some upload forms and validators check the extension literally and reject .jpe even though the file is a normal JPEG
No practical reason to keep the extension once a file leaves whatever system produced it

There's no reason to choose JPE deliberately today; it exists only because early operating systems limited extensions to three characters, which .jpg already satisfies.

Rename or convert JPE to JPG when a website, app, or content system doesn't recognize the .jpe extension, since the underlying image needs no re-encoding to do it.
