Worth knowing before you start:
- camera raw is demosaiced with ImageMagick's defaults, which will not match the camera's own rendering
- some cameras write lossily compressed raw, so the source is not always a complete sensor record
What is a K25 file?#
A K25 file holds the raw sensor dump written only by the Kodak DC25, a 1996 consumer digital camera and one of the first to save photos to a removable CompactFlash card.
K25 only comes up when opening images pulled from an original Kodak DC25 memory card; there is no reason to create one today.

What is an HDR file?#
An HDR file stores a high-dynamic-range raster image using Radiance's RGBE encoding, which packs red, green and blue mantissas with one shared exponent per pixel so a scene can hold a far wider range of brightness than a standard 8-bit image.
Reach for HDR when you need a compact high-dynamic-range environment map or lighting reference that most 3D tools and renderers can read without a plugin.
Convert HDR to OpenEXR when a VFX pipeline needs true floating-point precision, an alpha channel or multiple layers in one file, or convert it to JPEG or PNG once the image has been tone-mapped for a normal display.

What still opens a K25 file today?
K25 files open in raw converters built on the LibRaw library, such as RawTherapee and darktable, which still list the Kodak DC25 among their supported cameras. Kodak's own software for the camera is long unsupported.
Is K25 the same as other Kodak raw formats like DCR or KDC?
No. K25 is specific to the Kodak DC25, while DCR belongs to Kodak's professional DCS-series cameras and KDC belongs to later Kodak consumer models. The extensions come from the same manufacturer but are not interchangeable.
