PSD to ICO Converter

FileFlip converts PSD to ICO entirely inside your browser, using ImageMagick compiled to WebAssembly. The file is never uploaded to a server: it is read off your disk, converted on your own machine, and saved back by the browser. That means no file-size limit, no queue and no account.

How do I convert a PSD file to ICO?#

  1. Drop your PSD file onto the converter at the top of this page, or click it to pick one from your computer. You can add as many as you like.
  2. Leave the target set to ICO and the conversion starts on its own. FileFlip downloads 14.1 MB of WebAssembly the first time and nothing after that, then runs ImageMagick on your own machine.
  3. Save the ICO file. Your browser writes it straight to your downloads folder, because there was never a server holding it.

Does converting PSD to ICO lose quality?#

No. Converting PSD to ICO writes the data out again without discarding any of it, so nothing that was in the PSD file is lost on the way. What changes is the size of the file, not what is inside it.

Is it safe to convert PSD files online?#

Yes, because nothing is uploaded. FileFlip converts PSD files inside the browser tab you already have open, using WebAssembly builds of the same engines a desktop converter would install. Your file is read from your own disk into the page's memory, and no request carrying it is ever made.

You do not have to take that on trust. Open your browser's network panel, run a conversion, and you will see the engine come down and your file go nowhere. There is no upload, no server-side copy, no retention window, and no account tied to what you converted.

How FileFlip works lists every engine, its version and its download size, and shows how to check for yourself that nothing leaves your machine.

What PSD to ICO actually does to the file#

Converting PSD to ICO runs on ImageMagick, downloads 14.1 MB of WebAssembly the first time and nothing after that, writes the data out again without discarding any of it, keeps transparency, and drops EXIF metadata, ICC colour profile, layers and extra images.

  • ImageMagick is asked for a single image, so only the first frame, page, or icon size is read

What is a PSD file?#

A PSD file is Adobe Photoshop's native document format, keeping an image as a stack of independently editable layers, masks, adjustment layers and text objects instead of merging them into a single picture.

Keep a design as PSD while it's still being edited, so layers, masks and adjustment layers stay available for later changes.

Convert PSD to JPEG or PNG once a design is finished and needs to be viewed on the web or by someone without Photoshop, since flattening is what makes it viewable everywhere.

What is an ICO file?#

An ICO file packs several copies of the same picture, each a different pixel size and color depth, into one Windows icon container so the operating system can pick whichever copy fits the taskbar, the desktop, or a File Explorer thumbnail.

Use ICO for Windows application icons, desktop shortcuts, and website favicons, where the operating system or browser needs to choose the right size automatically.

Convert ICO to PNG when the image needs to be edited freely, resized to a size the icon doesn't already contain, or used anywhere other than Windows or a browser favicon.

PSD to ICO questions people ask#

What happens to my layers when I convert a PSD to JPEG?

Converting a PSD to JPEG merges every layer into one flat plane, bakes layer masks and adjustment layers permanently into the pixels, and rasterizes any text so it's no longer editable. Paths and guides are dropped entirely, since JPEG has nowhere to store them.

Is a PSB file the same as PSD?

PSB shares PSD's underlying container and specification but sets a different internal version number, which lets a PSB file exceed PSD's 30,000-pixel and roughly 2GB limits. A standard PSD reader can't open a PSB file and vice versa, so the two are related but not interchangeable.

Can I open a PSD file without Photoshop?

Yes. Affinity Photo, GIMP, Krita and the browser-based Photopea all open PSD files, and macOS Preview shows a flattened composite. Full layer, adjustment-layer and text fidelity is most reliable in Photoshop and Affinity Photo; the others vary in how much of the layer structure survives.

Does converting PSD to PNG lose the text layers?

Yes, converting a PSD to PNG rasterizes any text layer into fixed pixels, so the underlying font, size and editable string are gone, leaving only the shape of the letters behind. The text can no longer be selected or edited after that.
